Long Jetty: The aptly named town that's a hipster haven

Located on a peninsula between Tuggerah Lake and the Pacific Ocean lies the flourishing suburb of Long Jetty, aptly named for its three very long jetties extending out into the lake’s shallow waters.

This hipster hamlet has garnered praise as the Central Coast’s version of Sydney’s Newtown, with incredible cafes, street art and vintage stores. Though, unlike Newtown, a nature’s paradise awaits, where beachgoers can frolic at a choice of iconic beaches, or enjoy peaceful parks like Long Jetty Foreshore Reserve and Tuggerah National Park.

While Long Jetty was previously a bit of an unloved place, Jaimie Woodcock of McGrath Central Coast, has witnessed a change over the years, seeing it transform into a unique and vibrant village that has become a visitor destination and a property hotspot.

“The area was one of those rare finds that felt like a flashback to the 1950s when Sydney families had the simple fibro weekender on the Central Coast,” says Woodcock. “For decades, suburbs like Terrigal and Avoca appeared more attractive until affordability lured buyers north, where Long Jetty’s large level blocks, only a short walk to the beach, were at last appreciated.”

The suburb also has a reputation for having a friendly and welcoming community, with local businesses contributing to its unique character. For example, Joanne Giles, owner of Long Jetty Markets.

“Our markets offer a lively atmosphere for people to meet and socialise on the beautiful waterfront; many families spend the whole day there with a picnic blanket, kids’ bikes, and scooters in tow,” says Giles. “It’s a thriving mecca for local small businesses.”

Eat & Drink

Long Jetty reveals a vibrant cafe culture throughout its main street and beyond, including the trendy Green Tangerine, Glass Onion Society, and Modern Organic. The town’s food and drink scene is just as colourful as the murals that adorn the area. Locals and tourists alike also enjoy visiting The Savoy, a former ’50s cinema, given a new lease of life as a multipurpose bar and restaurant venue. Visit here over the weekend to enjoy a live DJ or watch a classic movie at their Savoy N’ Chill on Thursday nights.

See & Do

When the sun is out, locals and visitors flock to the area’s fantastic choice of beaches to spend the day swimming, surfing and sunbathing. Some of the most popular include Toowoon Bay, Blue Bay, and Soldiers Beach. Then, to end the day on a high note, take a scenic stroll along the coast or on The Long Jetty to watch the sun sink beyond the horizon. Similarly, the Long Jetty Markets are open once a month, and the annual Jetty Food & Wine Festival ensures that the social calendar is always full.
